How to use this site

Getting around, reading a file, following new files, and using the site by keyboard, screen reader or phone.

Getting around

This is, but my little file cabinet, and all of you are welcome here.

  • Folder tabs at the top go either to Work (things I built, replicated or worked through), Writing (essays I write, sometimes poetry or notes for quick updates) and the Register (interests, rabbit holes, experience and recognition over time, with a CV view that’s prettier than the pdf I send in applications).
  • Search files takes a file number such as WK 71D0 or R7, or a few words of a title. You are not expected to remember them, but the dropdown also holds suggestions for what you might be looking for. #working-on adding semantic search
  • Home is the whole map. It is home to this field notes experiment, with an option to open a random piece, look at what 1’m working on and a map of every file and register entry, grouped around the fields I work in, joined by lines that relate them.
  • Every page with a map or marks on it has a “How to read this page” box. It’s closed until you open it. I added it for better readabiltiy and experience.

Reading a file

  • The stamp says how well the file’s main claim has been tested, from E0 (untested) to E4 (checked by someone else); ✗ means an error was found. You can find the detailed explanation at How I rate my work.
  • Dashed pink always means speculation. Solid lines represent something that has been checked.
  • Short numbers after a link (WR is writing, WK is work, R is the register) say where in the tab that’s available at the top the link goes.
  • Amendments are dated corrections. Nothing is ever deleted, things are just amended.

Previews

Links to other files show a preview. With a mouse, hover over the link. With a keyboard, Tab to it; Esc closes it. On a phone, the first tap opens the preview at the bottom of the screen; tap Open (or the link again) to go there.

Following new files

  • RSS. Add this feed to a feed reader to get every new work and writing file. Most feed readers also find it if you paste in the site’s address.

Keyboard, screen readers and phones

  • Skip links. The first thing Tab reaches is “Skip to content”. On a file, the next is “Skip to connections”, which jumps to the side column.
  • Every map and chart has a text version. The home map has List view, the local portrait has As a list, and the register has the Ledger and the CV.
  • Everything you can select on a map can also be reached with Tab and selected with Enter.
  • Colour never carries meaning alone. Stamps say their level in words, speculation is dashed as well as pink, and work and writing differ in shape as well as colour.
  • On a phone, wide figures scroll sideways inside their own box rather than shrinking.
  • Maths is rendered with built-in MathML, so screen readers can read equations.
  • Animations stay off when your device asks for reduced motion.
